What's the Difference Between 4-Wheel and All-Wheel Drive?

If you own a large truck or an SUV, you may have either all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It's important to understand how both of these work and how they are different.

Four-wheel drive has been around for decades. With four-wheel drive, you are able to engage all four wheels on your vehicle to work at the same time. In older vehicles, you usually have to shift into the four-wheel mode, and with really old models, you may even have to come to a complete stop. All-wheel drive is a much newer technology and works a little differently. With all-wheel drive, a computer determines whether you need the back wheels or the front wheels to drive the vehicle.

Both all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive can provide you better traction and allow you to drive in heavy snow or mud. To learn more about these technologies and the vehicles that have them, come see the new inventory at Poway Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram!
